Preserving Batik, BLH of Yogyakarta City Coats Trees

Jogja, Jogjatrip.com—As an effort to preserve batik, the Environmental Agency (BLH) of Yogyakarta City conducted a positive movement by putting batik wrapping to some trees in several locations in Malioboro area.

Head of BLH of Yogyakarta City Suyana said that there are at least 200 trees that are wrapped with batik cloth. The batik wrapped trees can be seen along Malioboro Street up to Gedung Agung. There are also some along Pangeran Senopati Street and Yogyakarta City Hall complex. Suyana stated that batik motifs used on the wrapping are Yogyakartaesque, namely Barong and Ceplok Bolu Rambat.

“We made this breakthrough deliberately to preserve batik. Previously, the trees were painted circling black and white, now, we wrap them in batik,” Suyana said to Jogjatrip.com (9/16).

Wrapping the trees in batik meant to beautify Yogyakarta as a tourism city as well as preserving batik itself. The idea was inspired by the similar thing done by some artists on the Bienalle Yogyakarta, some times ago.

“The batik wrapping that we use is made of flexy paper specially printed so as to endure a year,” he stated.**(Andreas Eko Wahyu S)
