Palu Fried Onions

A. Overview

Fried onions are commonly used in many regions as an accompaniment of recipes and food dishes, such as soups, fried noodles, or fried rice, to make a better taste. However, this case is different with the typical fried onions from the city of Palu in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Besides used to enhancing the savory dishes, Palu fried onions also can be used as a snack and can be eaten such crackers. In fact, it has become a must souvenir carried by tourists when visiting the city and been included in the culinary exhibition, which held both nationally and internationally. Starting from the number of foreign tourists who made it as souvenir, Palu fried onions has started to become one of the commodities exported to various countries, such as France, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, and China.

Indeed, Palu fried onions is different with the other fried onions from other regions in general. The difference lies on its type of onion used to make the fried onions, which is known as “Stone Onion” or also called as “Bawang Batu” in local language. This type of onion is known to have several special distinctive, such as not as red as any usual onion, smaller, and harder than the other onion in general. This type of onion also cannot grow in other regions in Indonesia. In fact, Palu is the only region which suitable for stone onion plantation than any other regions in Central Sulawesi. This is because the land contained on the region is sandy which able to thrive and produce the type of onion well. In addition, the local government is also working out with the local universities and local farmers to make these onions as main commodity and make it easier for employers to get the raw material for making fried onions.

In 2011, there are approximately 38 fried onions industries scattered around the region of Palu that were producing various brands of fried onions, such as Garuda Jaya, Cendana, Sri Rejeki, Mustika, Raja, Bunga Kaili, Mahkota Palu, and more. In fact, some of them have already become the typical fried onions distributors supplying across the archipelago and even to abroad. Moreover, some of them also have already started to market their products using Internet, via website, blog, or social networks, such as Facebook and Twiter.

B. Features

Palu fried onions has more features compared to other fried onions in general. The features include the distinctive smell which tastier and the crunchy texture that make it can be eaten like the other snack. In addition to the special distinctive, the process of making is also through by choosing the hygienic and high quality onion which cooked without preservatives, dyes, or crispy makers.

Another feature that can be found in the Palu fried onions is its endurance to last up to two years because it is packed with aluminum foil that can withstand the changes of temperature, so the stability of the humidity is maintained. Moreover, its quality will remain durable even being stored in the fridge for a long time. For those who have a high blood of cholesterol need not to worry because Palu fried onions is fried using the non-cholesterol cooking oil. It also has been certified by Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (similar with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in United States) for safe consumption.

Informatively, onion is known to contain nutritional values, including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, iron, sodium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, and more. It also contains the important nutrition useful for human body, such as sulfur compounds and flavonoids that are believed to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Another function of the onion is the ability to help liver to remove toxins from the body considering it also contains saponins and can help human skin to look young considering it contains sulfur. According to a research, eating onion every day can help the growth of bone tissue and reduce the risk of osteoporosis by 20% on human body.

C. Location

Visitors who been on Palu city can find the Palu fried onions easily, for example they can find it at Jl. Basuki Rahmat Lr. Perjuangan No. 33, Jl. Cendana No. 14, Jl. Raden Ajeng Kartini No. 80 (Palu Timur), Jl. Sungai Lambangan (Palu Barat), Jl. Kelor Lr. I No. 5 (Palu Barat), Jl. Jamur Lr. P. Asuhan No. 18 (Palu Barat), Jl. Kijang No. 62, and others, in Central Sulawesi province, Indonesia.

D. Access

Visitors can make a trip using a flight from any place in Indonesia to the Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar to take about 2 hours for transit, and continue to the Palu Mutiara Airport to take about 55 minutes. Arriving in the airport, visitors can use the service of public taxis to the addresses mentioned above. Meanwhile, in the city is also provided public transportation in the form of mini bus and others to explore the city.

E. Prices

The price of Palu fried onions is varied depending on the size of the package. Palu fried onions is packed in plastic and sealing jar. The plastic packaging is sold as follows: 100 grams = IDR. 20,000.00; 200 grams = IDR. 40,000.00; 250 grams = IDR. 50,000.00; 500 grams = IDR. 100,000.00; and 1 kilogram = IDR. 200,000.00. Meanwhile, the sealing jar packaging is sold according to weight as follows: 150 grams weight = IDR. 350,000.00; 250 grams weight = IDR. 50,000.00; and 500 grams weight = IDR. 100,000.00. (2012).
