Amsterdam Fortress of Ambon City

A. Brief Information

Following the establishment of Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie (VOC) by the Dutch colonial government in the 17th century, Amsterdam Fortress was built in the city of Ambon, Maluku Province, as the branch of VOC in the eastern Indonesia. The fortress stands nearby the Hila Old Church, and is the second Dutch fortress (another Dutch fortress is known as Kasteel van Verre) in the Land of Maluku. In addition, the fortress was once revamped in 1993 A.D.

It is said that George Everhard Rumphius, a German historian and natural scientist, had ever been settling down in the fortress during 1660 to 1670 A.D. During his occupation in Ambon, Rumphius wrote many books about the diversity of flora and fauna in Ambon.

Amsterdam Fortress is one of the Dutch colonials` remnants in Ambon that bears so many undiscovered mysteries. The fortress and the other one are waiting to be researched by a number of researchers around the globe so that all the historical notes within the fortress can be disclosed for a better future.

Amsterdam Fortress is located in the sub-district of Hila, Ambon City, Maluku Province, Indonesia.

To reach the location from the heart of Ambon city, you can take any public transportation as well as private vehicles in approximately one hour.

F. Accommodation and other Facilities

Due the day this article was written, there is no any hotel as well as accommodation available. However, if you want to spend more than a day here, you can stay at the local inhabitants` homes. The Maluku people are known as the smiling-people, thus you don`t need to be afraid of them.
