Great Mosque of Mamuju

A. Overview

Shuhada Mosque or also known as the Great Mosque of Mamuju could become another alternative of tourism object for tourists when visiting Mamuju city in West Sulawesi. For Muslims who are visiting the city, they have to perform Islamic prayers during their visit, and interestingly they can choose the place for doing a prayer at the Great Mosque of Mamuju, as well as to enjoy the charms found in the mosque that became the pride of Muslims in Mamuju city.

Looking at the mosque, our imagination will immediately be directed to the mosque in the legendary fairy tale in the story of the Thousand and One Nights. The mosque has indeed a unique building established by in modern paradigm, unlike the usual other mosques in various regions in Indonesia. The mosque has become new attraction of the tourism objects in Mamuju.

The mosque construction was begun in 2007 and completed in 2009, so the building is quite new. The religious activities have been carried out in the mosque, which has four towers measuring 75 meters height, since the previous holy month Ramadan in 2009. The building size of the Great Mosque of Mamuju is quite large and can accommodate more than 3,000 people. In fact, when holding the prayer of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, the great mosque complex can accommodate up to 20,000 people.

The mosque consists of two floors. The first floor is used as a place consists of various supporting facilities, including the library, Quran Education Park (TPA), Islamic Centre, place of ablution, as well as a place for the implementation of religious events. Whereas holding the congregation prayer is provided a large space on the second floor.

Looking more inside the mosque, visitors can find a special space of worship for important guests. The space was built considering the mosque is a symbol of the greatness of Islam in Mamuju. This space was ever used by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Boediono, who was accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs, Gamawan Fauzi, the Minister of Agriculture, Suswono, and the Minister of Public Works, Djoko Kirmanto, to perform Friday prayer on their visit in Mamuju.

B. Features

The most special thing that could make people to be amazed when visiting the Great Mosque of Mamuju is the 22-karat pure gold calligraphy put on the pulpit. The calligraphy that reads "Allah" and "Muhammad” and worth of 1.3 million rupiah, has a diameter of approximately 170 cm and becomes the first ever made in Indonesia.

In addition to the calligraphy, some of the mosque pillars are also gold-covered. According to the Regent of Mamuju district, Suhardi Duka, the gold calligraphy placed inside the Great Mosque of Mamuju should not be interpreted as a form of arrogance. It was made so Muslims who live in the area may have pride of their mosque.

Another peculiarity of the mosque can be seen from the calligraphies mounted on the ceiling of the mosque. Various ornaments on the parts of the mosque also add to its beauty, which is also being embellished with colorful paint.

The Great Mosque of Mamuju becomes the religious activities center for Muslims in Mamuju. The lively atmosphere can be seen when the holy month of Ramadan arrives. This mosque will be filled with religious activities, such as breaking fast together, Tarawih prayer in congregation, reading Quran, and much more. The similar atmosphere also can be seen on the Islamic holidays, such as the Isra and 'Mi'raj, Prophet's Birthday, Islamic New Year (the first day of Muharram), and so on.

C. Location

The Great Mosque of Mamuju or Syuhada Mosque is located in the downtown of Mamuju city, precisely located at Jl. KH Abdul Ahadi, Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia.

D. Access

To reach the location is quite easy because the mosque is located in the downtown of Mamuju city, the capital of Mamuju district. Visitors can depart from Makassar in South Sulawesi or from major cities in Indonesia by airplane to take about one hour.

Visitors who are making trip through landline, they may use the service of public transports, such as buses, to take about 12 hours.

E. Ticket Prices

Visitors who want to enter the Great Mosque of Mamuju are free of charge. However, they set aside a little money on the charity box in the mosque usually used to maintain and preserve the mosque.

F. Accommodation and Other Facilities

The mosque has been equipped with various supporting facilities, such as parking lot, bathroom, public toilet, place of ablution, and of course, visitors may perform a prayer in the mosque. Visitors who want to eat, many restaurants and food stalls are available in the city offering typical cuisine of the region. They can also easily find souvenir centers in the city.
