Sunan Ampel Mosque

A. Overview

One of the famous religious tourist destinations in Surabaya is Sunan Ampel Mosque, the second largest mosque after Al-Akbar Mosque Surabaya. The mosque is located in one area with the tomb of Sunan Ampel, precisely located in front of the tomb.

Sunan Ampel was one of Wali Sanga (9 Islamic saints) who contributed to spread Islam in Java. He was born with the original name Raden Mohammad Ali Rahmatullah in 1401 in Champa, Cambodia. His father was Maulana Malik Ibrahim or also known by the name Ibrahim as-Samarkandy, and his mother was a princess of Champa.

Raden Mohammad Ali Rahmatullah at his 20 years old decided to move to Java, precisely to Surabaya, when it was under territory of the Kingdom of Majapahit under the reign of King Brawijaya, who embraced to Islam. In such a young age, he was well known to be smart in Islamic science, even he was believed by King Brawijaya to teach and spread Islamic teachings in Surabaya.

Looking from his service, the king donated the land area of ​​approximately 12 hectares in the area of Ampel Delta or Surabaya as Islamic teaching center. Since then, Raden Ali Mohammad Rahmatullah was known as Sunan Ampel.

Under the mission of spreading Islam, Sunan Ampel built a mosque that later known as Sunan Ampel Mosque together with the community. In this place he remained until his death and was buried in 1481. His tomb is located on the right front of the mosque and still can be found and often visited by people up to the present.

B. Features

Sunan Ampel Mosque has classic Javanese-Arabic architecture. The uniqueness and historical value of the mosque are shown on the 16 pillars, which are made of teak wood measuring 17 meters without connectors and still standing strong, even the mosque has reached over 600 years old. These pillars are decorated with carvings as relics of the Kingdom of Majapahit. This mosque is equipped with 48 doors with a diameter 1.5 x 2 meters.

Another building on the mosque complex that became the hallmark of the mosque is 50 meters high tower, which previously used as a place to sound a call to prayer. Next to the tower is found a dome in Javanese hall-shaped style with a crown in sun-shaped as a symbol of the triumph of the Kingdom of Majapahit. Visitors also can find some historic wells located around the mosque in which the water contained was believed to have some peculiarities to cure many diseases, but the wells are now covered with iron.

Another feature of the mosque lay on its philosophical values ​​that appear on the five arches which symbolize the Five Pillars of Islam. Those arches starting from the south include the one called Gapuro munggah (ascending), which offers the atmosphere of the village to Seng Market in Masjid Al-Haram in the city of Mecca. The atmosphere describe a Muslim is required to take pilgrimage to Mecca when he can afford.

After passing through Gapuro munggah, the visitors will enter the village that becomes a shopping area provide all the needs of Muslims, such Moslem clothes, perfumes, dates, and various accessories that can be purchased when a person has been ever took pilgrimage. This market shopping area is called Gubah Ampel Suci Market.

The next arch is called Gapuro Poso (fasting) located at the south side of Sunan Ampel Mosque. The area of Gapuro Poso gives an atmosphere such in the fasting month of Ramadan which means that a Muslim should fast. After passing through this arch, visitors will get to the page that brings the amazing view of the main building of Sunan Ampel Mosque equipped with the high minaret.

After passing through Gapuro Poso, visitors will find other arch called Gapuro Ngamal (charity). Here, visitors can make charity or donation to the mosque, which the donations will be used for the preservation and cleanliness.

The fourth arch is Gapuro Madep (confront) located at the west side of the main building of the mosque. On this location, visitors will find the tomb of Mbah Shanhaji. The tomb is used as Qibla direction of Sunan Ampel Mosque. The last arch is called Gapuro Paneksen (witness) to get the visitors into the tomb.

C. Location

Sunan Ampel Mosque is located in Ampel village, Semampir, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.

D. Access

The location of Sunan Ampel Mosque is easy to reach, because both are located in the downtown of Surabaya city. The location can be reached using public transports, such as buses, or using private vehicles from the Jembatan Merah Bus Terminal or Joyoboyo Bus Terminal.

E. Ticket prices

Visitors who are visiting to Sunan Ampel Mosque and the tomb of Sunan Ampel are free of charge.

F. Accommodation and other facilities.

The area has been equipped with various supporting facilities by the local government to make the visitors feel safe and comfortable so they can pray at peace.
